What is Compounding

What is Compounding?

Compounding enables a patient’s medication to be made specifically to that patients’ requirements, including dosage form, dose, flavour (where applicable), ingredients (both active and inactive).

Traditionally, all medications were compounded – handmade by the pharmacist, based on a doctors prescription – and in essence compounding is not a new art. However, in our evolving world compounding is becoming increasingly popular due to its ability to finely tailor medications directly to a person’s individual needs. Healthcare is becoming more and more personalised, so why should medications be any different?

Compounding can be accessed by a variety of healthcare practitioners such as doctors, dentists, veterinarians, naturopaths, dieticians, physiotherapists, psychologists, midwives, nurse practitioners and clinicians in the beauty/cosmeceutical or tattooing industry.
